A Digital Nomad in Tulum

Being a Digital Nomad in Tulum

Even prior to the pandemic, digital nomads were being attracted to Tulum as a haven for remote working.  The infrastructure, and crucially, the internet reliability has improved dramatically in recent years.

So whether you work for a multinational remotely, are a creative collaborating with clients online, or perhaps you are a technical developer desiring to escape the confines of the traditional office, then Tulum has spaces to suit your wants and needs.

To save your valuable time, we have curated this list with the most popular workspaces in Tulum.  These can generally be described as either coworking spaces, cafes, beach-based, hotels or poolside, although some fall into multiple categories.  So, if you are looking for a poolside workspace with a beach view, then you'll find it here.

Coworking and collaborating

The coworking spaces (type 'cowork' into the search field), of which there are a growing number, offer the most business facilities, such as printing and private call booths, and usually include refreshments along with your membership fee.  Unsurprisingly, longer-term (monthly) membership packages are better value than day rates and also normally come with additional benefits.

Coworking spaces are good places to bump into other digital nomads, however if you are also looking to meet up with other like-minded individuals in more of a social setting, then check-out coworking.tulum, a club for remote working professionals that organises events and meet-ups in Tulum as well as providing access to some savings at premium locations.  They also have a members' chat group useful for quick answers (not only work-related!) from those in the know.  Tudu Tulum family also get a discount on their subscription, so check out the offer via the Deals tab.

Work hard, play hard - fun for when the sun goes down

For those that don't require as much structure as is offered in the cowork spaces, and relish the flexibility that comes along with remote working, then there are many other options around Tulum.

Whether you are in La Veleta, Aldea Zama, Centro or down the beach, there are workspaces within walking distance (try searching by your location or use the map function in the app to explore).

Non-traditional workspaces

You may have specific minimum work requirements, so we've provided additional information about each workspace in our list, such as the internet speed (recently checked) and whether they have a generator in case of power outages.

As this is still a growing town with increasing demands on power, there are occasions when the power in specific areas or streets goes down, especially while they make upgrades.  Advance notice is normally given, however if you find yourself caught unaware, then use our map function to locate the closest alternate workspace.

Weather also used to interrupt internet services in the past, though much of Tulum now has fast and reliable fibre-optic internet running underground, so those interruptions are becoming rarer.  If you do need a sheltered workspace, try searching for 'rain' for the best options.

Fast & reliable internet

The cost of working at each space will vary dramatically.  Many non-cowork locations only expect a 'fair' consumption, and depending on the space (such as cafe versus boutique hotel) or whether it's busy or quiet season, then this expectation is often subjective, and generally in-line with the style and standard of the establishment.  As long as you're not filling a table when there is a queue of people however, then most businesses will appreciate your custom.

Where a specific 'minimum' consumption is required we have stated it, and of course, you can always work from 'home'!
